The decision followed a Crown inquiry led by District Attorney Newcombe. The family later attended a farewell hotel dinner as Browning left without a cash settlement, and Mary returned home with her parents. Newark Star-Eagle reports Mary’s attempt to join a convent failed and she vowed to marry a pot boy, seeking a simple home. The pope-like tension of the day contrasted with Mary’s tearful insistence on freedom from the arranged path.
