Coronado Did Not Reach Plains North of Arkansas River
Council Grove Kansas August 11 A P Francisco Vasquez de Coronado did not penetrate the great plains farther north than across the Arkansas River, says William E Connelley secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society at the centennial celebration He argues against superficial historians who claim he crossed to the Nebraska border He traced Coronados route from Mexico in 1540 noting the winter on the Rio Grande and the capture of a pueblo captive who spoke of Quivira where gold lay The Turk the captive led the expedition toward Quivira but was bound and strangled before reaching the land, marking his martyrdom for his people The account emphasizes the Wichita Indians and the early Santa Fe trail connections
