Mushroom Rock State Park: Kansas Tiny with Big Rock Formations
The five acre Mushroom Rock State Park in Ellsworth County near Salina lacks its own ranger and keeps a quiet profile, though its mushroom and Stonehenge like rocks draw visitors. Dakota sandstone, cemented by lime, created the enduring formations 80 million years ago, with historic inscriptions and guided tours by Kanopolis staff. The park plans modest upgrades such as a new toilet and faces questions about a nonworking water fountain and modest summer visitation.
