Drenching rains of up to a foot sent floodwaters over towns and rail lines in Wisconsin, washing through buildings and roads. Emergency crews and property owners faced a massive cleanup as waters receded on Friday.
In Bernespa Minnesota reporting, a new arthritis drug Arava from Hoechst Mari on Roussel won initial FDA advisory backing. Rheumatoid arthritis affects about 2 million Americans, mostly women.
Dozens dead as powerful car bombs struck two U S embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam within five minutes. At least 81 people died and more than 1 600 were injured, including eight Americans. Lawrence city commissioners will discuss a TranSystems study proposing at least 2 million dollars to reconfigure the 15th and Iowa intersection. The plan adds double left turns in both directions, two new right turns, new signals, four bike paths and sidewalks to raise a failing evening service level from F. KU facilities chief Rodger Droke says smoother flow would reduce frustration. The 10 thousand dollar study, funded by KU and the city, was to be considered at the meeting starting 6:35 p.m. at city hall.
U S District Judge Norma Holloway Johnson orders show cause proceedings into possible prosecution of Kenneth Starr over leaks to the media regarding grand jury material in the Monica Lewinsky investigation. The judge notes repeated disclosures and cites Chief Judge Starr’s office as a likely source while allowing an appeals court review with limited participation by Clinton's lawyers.
