A Pan American Grace air liner, the Santa Maria, on a Guayaquil to Cristobal flight, is reported down about 20 miles off Colon breakwater. Ten passengers and three crewmen were aboard. all survived status unknown. Navy destroyers and numerous planes hunt the crash site in the mosquito gulf of the Atlantic as weather hampered signals.
