Democrats Boost Antipoverty Bill By 245 Million
House Democrats press a bigger Johnson antipoverty request, raising the OEO authorization to 1.99 billion from 1.75 billion and 1.5 billion previously. The plan tightens congressional control, expands Head Start to 400 million for 845000 children, and increases Neighbor Hood Youth Corps funding. It also shifts the work experience program to the Labor Department and mandates 40 000 of 45 000 Job Corps participants be women.
