Beat Mass Sparked Controversy in Rome Chapel
In Rome at St. Philip Neri oratory three mop haired youth groups performed a nine part beat mass composed by Marcello Giobini. About 500 inside and 1,000 outside packed the church with priests, police had to restore order as crowds reacted to the electric guitars drums and organ. The event titled Beat Mass was sponsored by Oratorian Fathers with words adapted by Rev Carlo Gas barri. The Rev Sinaldo Sinaldi defended it as a means to express religious sentiment amid a merciless era while noting it does not become church worship. Public reaction ranged from praise to disbelief with Il Messaggero noting the unprecedented turnout and chaos at the door.
