In Shanghai area Japanese authorities promise to release the British steamer Tungwo by morning after halting it near the Whangpoo river mouth. A British gunboat was prepared to force release if needed. British demand followed an alleged pistol shot at a Japanese soldier.

John M. Landon 82 father of Alf M. Landon the 1936 Republican presidential nominee died today at a Kansas City hospital of heart disease. He moved from Western Pennsylvania to Kansas in 1904 and kept home with his son in Topeka where funeral services are to be held Friday. His wife died in 1914 and a sister died in Marietta at seven.
Inspecting officers hosted at a noon luncheon by KU military department staff and faculty during the annual federal inspection. Col R H McMaster of Omaha led today's admin inspection. The KU units were to march for final inspection at 4:30 this afternoon and conclude tomorrow.
Captain William S. Brady, after four years as an instructor in coast artillery at the University of Kansas, has been ordered to duty in the Panama Canal department. He has been active in KU affairs and chaired the Homecoming committee last November. His KU service ends with the current school year in June. a successor is not yet announced.
Cecil Meadows Kern airport superintendent reported sighting a wrecked airplane from a searching plane near Sunday Peak in Tulare County. He believed it was the privately owned craft that vanished Monday with four Visalia residents aboard.
County commissioners heard Barker avenue property owners urging approval of paving petitions already cleared by the city council. Darrel Liston a University of Kansas student from Ft Madison Iowa is ill with measles at Watkins hospital. He entered late yesterday and three cases of measles are reported in the hospital by Dr Canuteson.
President Roosevelt approved a peace-time naval appropriation of 546 million 866 thousand 494 dollars for the next fiscal year. The funding aims to finance the United States Navy and support defense and maritime programs.
More than 200 Lawrence business men attended the annual dinner of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce at the Country Club. Dolph Simons retired president and John Brand newly elected president spoke of the year’s work. Captain Patrick Irving O Hay delivered an extended talk, recounting adventures with Jack London and Will Rogers and claiming numerous military experiences. A family with one child and a single earner would face about 7.71 dollars monthly income tax, while the total bill reaches 4.72 billion dollars. Sir John Simon called this the largest peacetime budget in British history.

A gas explosion and ensuing fire in the St. Clair Coal mine near Pottsville Pennsylvania killed seven workers and injured eleven. Rescue crews recovered six bodies within seven hours as the blast sent miners fleeing through the dark damp air. two men near an exit survived to raise the alarm.
