Madrid reports King Alfonso abdicated at six o clock after a republican uprising led by Niceto Zamora. The king left with his conscience tranquil and promised safe passage, while republican authorities and crowds celebrated the shift toward a republic across Barcelona and other cities.
The narrative traces the decline of the Bourbons, Carlist resistance, and Cuban unrest, leading to Alfonso XII’s death in 1885 and Queen Cristina’s regency for Alfonso XI. Sixteen men emerged from the sanitary district sewage disposal tunnel after flames, smoke and gas trapped workers and rescuers overnight. Fire Captain James F. ONeill remained missing as crews pressed to reach others, while 46 were injured and a policeman died near the scene. Firefighters used a new smoke ejector from Kenosha to clear fumes and bring victims to St. Anthony's Hospital.
Topeka April 14 AP Gov Harry H Woodring voiced confidence that the 60- year agreement by Standard Oil Company of Indiana to take 6 000 barrels daily from southeastern Kansas stripper wells would be satisfactorily arranged. He said arrangements have been made for marketing all but 1 500 barrels of the well’s daily 7 000 barrel production and an official later day announcement was expected.
Buenos Aires reports a brewing cabinet crisis as five of President Uriburu's ministers are expected to resign within 24 hours. The move signals a shift as radicals, ousted by revolution last year and recently favored in provincial elections, seek to regain influence.
Federal Judge Richard J Hopkins spoke at Trinity Lutheran Church on the trial of Jesus, arguing the capital charges could not be completed in one day and that Jesus was tried in both Sanhedrin and Roman courts. Two committees oversee planning with school and chamber of commerce representation. Free moving pictures ice cream prizes and a noon basket luncheon are planned along with a concert by the Springs orchestra and health buttons for children meeting standards. National observance aligns with Hoover White House Conference on child health and protection.
