In Paris the Viet Cong spokesman Than Buu Kiem accused the United States of spreading rumors about private Vietnam peace talks to calm antiwar sentiment at home. Lavery Break-In Suspect in Jail
Thomas Michael Mehler 24 listed no permanent address remains in Douglas County jail on a 5000 bond after being bound over to the May term of District Court on burglary charges. A preliminary hearing was held Wednesday. Mehler told police he stayed with friends in Lawrence and previously lived in Wichita and Wisconsin. He is charged with burglary tools possession and second degree burglary for a March 30 Lavery Vending Co. break in. In District Court, Dale Mumford 19 faced a jury trial on felonious assault tied to a June 21 1968 confrontation with Patrolman Larry Loveland after an incident at The Thirsty Bar. Two co-defendants face later trials. Danny Lee Mumford 18 is already serving a one to three year term at the Hutchinson reformatory.

Pamela Amess ten from 1200 West 21st Street was shaken up after her car carrying her collided with two others at 6 13 p m Wednesday at West 21st and Tennessee Streets The Ehrman car struck Ivans Amess car and police put damages at 125 to 500 and 200 dollars for Amess Ehrman and Zinn respectively. Two other crashes also reported including a KU student Darrell Valentine damage and a parked car hit by Thomas Lee Jr at Third and Locust streets.

College Rodeo Opens Friday at KU Fairgrounds
About 200 contestants from 25 Midwest schools are set to compete in the KU Intercollegiate Rodeo at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The three day event runs Friday 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 2 p.m. with a 10 a.m. parade on Massachusetts Street and a public pre-show barbecue. Events include bull riding saddle bronc calf roping steer wrestling bareback riding ribbon roping girls barrel racing goat tying breakaway roping and fraternity steer riding.

Police Recover Stolen Pistol From 12 Year Old Boy
Lawrence police seized a BB rifle and a .38 pistol from a 12 year old youth after a neighbor reported vandalism. The pistol was taken to the sheriff's department, with the youth claiming it was stolen from a nearby house in Douglas County.
