The Argus announces leaders for its automobile, ring, merchandise and gold watch contest. Candidates are urged to ensure their names remain on the list as they could win valuable awards, with Ford Automobile to be awarded to Mrs. M. Satcher and other prizes including rings, merchandise orders, and gold watches to named entrants such as Miss Sadie Perlman and Miss Edna Mixon.
Progress updates show rapid changes in standings for Ford car and other prizes. Mrs. M. Satcher maintains a strong lead by about 10 000 votes over Rebecca Sharbrough, with Sara Horn replacing Mona Patterson. W. V Copeland remains in the mix as Lena Davis overtakes Mrs. Ellis for district lead.
Washington January 2 Congress convened after the holiday recess and a long session is seen ahead. The Russian treaty is abrogated, the pension bill and urgent deficiency appropriations loom, with tariff changes likely first. The Ways and Means panel may push revised schedules including the iron and steel plan within ten days.
New Orleans January 3 Associated Press reports the President of the English Board of Trade has taken up arbitration of the dispute between Manchester spinners and striking operators. A settlement is expected this week. Read the Argus Classified ads.
Crowded Ellisville Agricultural High School plans expansion before the next term. Local leaders back a legislative act to allow the county to issue interest bearing loan warrants to fund a dormitory, with a small tax levy increase to establish a sinking fund. Representative Bush expected to introduce the bill soon.
Jackson Mississippi reports Senator-Elect James K. Vardaman, amid a show of triumph, visiting the state house after years, amid praise from friends. His inauguration is set for January 16 and the joint session on the 18th will elect a U.S. senator for the term starting March 4, 1913.
The State legislature began work after organization. Senate elected A C Anderson president pro tem. J D Falkner won clerk of the senate. E M Barber Jr named sergeant at arms. Madie Pitzgerald chosen postmistress. House speakers Hinds native Hithe M Quin named speaker. clerk contest featured L Pink Smith and others. Continues on page 3.
Jackson January 3 The House recessed to 3 pm for postmaster elections. Speaker Quin announced no more negro porters and messengers at the capitol, to be replaced by deserving white boys. Senate invites Wilson to address. House busy electing minor officers and adopting secret ballot for filing. Farmers Union holds conference in the House chamber to push farmer-friendly legislation.
Jackson Mass January 3. A note on the two presiding officers of the House and Senate shows they prize function over looks. Speaker Quin dislikes beauty contests while President Pro Tempore Anderson is not an Adonis. both are capable leaders with strong magnetism and experience. Quin is a lively speaker whose slogan we are out for business or we have no business to be out has energized the House. Anderson is a level headed legislator who compensates for looks with hard sense and years of service.
