Ohio teen Tina Bischoff, aged 18, plans a non stop English Channel crossing from England to France and back after a nine hour and three minute swim last year. The feat follows planning talks and potential sponsorships for the bold transatlantic challenge.
Violent winds and thunderstorms struck the Central Plains as a Gulf air mass roared across. In Hedington Kansas homes were unroofed trees downed and power lines failed injuring several people though none seriously. Runoff flood water blocked a highway and crops on nearby farms were nearly destroyed. Thunderstorms stretched into Nebraska Iowa Arkansas Tennessee Virginia and beyond with heavy rains aiding drought relief in some areas.
The National Fire Prevention and Control Administration blamed faulty wiring and panic for 162 deaths at the Beverly Hills Supper Club near Cincinnati. The report notes no internal fire walls or detectors and no sprinkler system, with the fire burning long in combustible ceiling tile and wood after the 1972 remodel. It ranks as the nation’s worst nightclub fire in 35 years, following Boston’s Coconut Grove tragedy in 1942.
