Senate Passes 5 Per Cent Minimum Tax On Certain Incomes

The Senate approved a flat 5 percent minimum income tax on income not currently taxed, including half of capital gains, while rejecting a Kennedy plan for a graduated tax on tax free income. The chamber also defeated a measure to curb tax losses from hobby farming and voted to require foundations to give at least 6 percent of assets to charity.

Jet Set suspect linked to theft ring nabbed in Las Vegas

Jose Hugo Garavito 29 of Bogota Colombia was arrested outside a Strip hotel after allegedly cashing 1700 in stolen American Express Travelers Checks. Investigators found thousands more in his pockets and linked the checks to London Paris and Caracas. He faces four forgery counts possession of stolen checks and fugitive from Florida burglary charges.
