Senate OKs 15 Percent Boost In Social Security

The Senate approved a 15 percent rise in monthly Social Security payments and nearly doubled the minimum benefits. The plan would add 6.2 billion dollars annually for about 25 million retired Americans, despite Nixon Administration concerns about inflation. The chamber also allowed parents to deduct 357 dollars a year for a child’s college expenses and blocked a tax reform provision on foundations.

Private twin engine plane crash kills 11 near Albuquerque

A private twin engined craft carrying eight men and three women from Las Vegas exploded and crashed into a snowy field near the Sandia Mountains killing all 11 aboard. Witnesses said the plane was flying low when it exploded and bodies were scattered. Carroll Thompson of Dalhart, Texas piloted the Panhandle Aviation Co. plane en route from Las Vegas to Dalhart. Eyeglasses and two burned twenty dollar bills were recovered from the scene. Police said many victims were unrecognizable and severely damaged.

Computer Saves Pay Day for EG&G Nevada Site

EG&G employees at the Nevada Test Site missed payroll this week when about $55,000 in checks picked up by a Las Vegas messenger failed to reach the site on Thursday morning. A stop order was issued, the checks reissued by computer, and delivered before the shift ended five to six hours late. The messenger was located near day’s end, was unavailable, and has been discharged.

Circus Circus Casino Robbed by Bandit

A lone robber at Circus Circus seized more than 4775 dollars from a 23 year old cashier using a demand note and a simulated weapon. He fled the casino as 30 deputies and 15 guards secured entrances but did not capture a suspect. It was the first successful casino robbery in 1969.

Witness For Tate Murders Tells Grand Jury

Susan Atkins 21 testified for two hours in a secret grand jury hearing about the Sharon Tate slayings and the Manson Family. She claimed Manson ordered the killings and said she felt dead after telling her story. The hearing included plans to call Terry Melcher and Winifred Chapman among others as witnesses.
