A spectacular Sunday night fire destroyed two large warehouses at 915 N. Main St in Las Vegas, drawing more than 30 firefighters and spectators from nearby homes and casinos. The blaze started in the roof of the former McKesson Wholesale Liquor Co and spread to an adjoining vacant building as explosions rocked the site.
Deputies seized half a pound of uncut white heroin valued at 50 000 at the home of casino dealer Robert Lee Johnson in Las Vegas. Johnson, 43, was booked on possession charges with a snub-nose revolver found in a closet. The raid followed a weeks long narcotics investigation and involved large balloon packets and jars of heroin. Authorities noted a New York seizure of millions in pure heroin but no link was confirmed at press time.

Jewish activists delivered food and blankets to the Alcatraz occupiers as a Hanukkah ceremony unfolded amid the ruins. Dr. Steven Faffin and American Jewish Congress members crossed the bay with kosher meals aboard a fishing boat. About 400 visitors joined the gathering while Indian leader Richard Oakes pressed for federal recognition of the long dispute over the island.
Louis Harris reports Nixon earned only moderate gains after his November speech. Positive support shifted to 51 44 from 51 46 pre address while 57 percent feel part of the silent majority behind him. Most approve the substance of the address, and 82 percent say his appeal seemed to sway the public.
