Helldorado Draws Record Las Vegas Crowds

Immense crowds filled the Helldorado Village and rodeo stands across four nights drawing praise as the city’s most successful celebration. Miss Southern Nevada Evelyn Jones won $50 in the bathing beauty contest with sponsors from local names, while Miss Alice Richardson and Miss Elaine Ballard took second and third prizes. Judges included Cal Godshall and Ray Hamilton.

Boulder Dam Area Concessions Awarded for Twenty Years

Grand Canyon-Boulder Dam Tours Inc led by R. E. Ruckster and Paul Webb will run all hotels cabins air transport boats docks autos freight and mail service plus pack and saddle horse operations in the Boulder Dam area for twenty years. Secretary Ickes announced after days of talks. The firm must provide facilities and set rates with six percent return and any profits above go to the Interior Department. The company has run the Boulder Dam Hotel in Boulder City and Grand Canyon Airlines in recent years.

Rotarians Plan Meadows Party in Las Vegas

Las Vegas Rotary Club plans a dinner dance and ladies night at The Meadows next Thursday May 27 at 8 pm replacing the noon meeting. Boulder City Rotarians join, with over fifty expected. total attendance may reach 150 to 200 including guests. O J Smith chairs the committee, promising a top Rotary event with entertainment.

Las Vegas High Plans Busy Graduation Schedule

Principal Maud Frazier organizes Las Vegas High School commencement with about ninety three graduates. The Junior class banquet and Senior ball occur May 22 at the Methodist church and new grammar school gym respectively. Baccalaureate is May 30 in the gym and Bishop J Harold Brinley will deliver the address. Commencement is June 2 at the War Memorial auditorium.

Social Service Laws Explained at Las Vegas Rotary

Wm. Royle and Robert O Connor of Reno spoke at the Las Vegas Rotary Club on social security law. Royle, head of the state social security department, outlined law sections and employer obligations noting Germany and England adopting social security decades earlier and advocating U S enactment. O Connor, deputy U S Internal Revenue Collector, urged timely reports and payments by employers and employees to avoid federal enforcement.

Carl F. Wente of First National Bank of Reno says a Las Vegas branch will open within thirty days. The Reno bank, a Bank of America subsidiary, has pursued the project for several months pending approval and completion.

Junior Chamber Brings Big Band to Las Vegas

The Junior Chamber sponsors a Las Vegas visit by the Tournament of Roses band of 115 from Pasadena Junior College. A 15 member Victor McLaglen motorcycle corps, directed by Capt. DeRush, accompanies the band for a June 4 city park concert on a Union Pacific special train.
