Frost Kills Early Frost Hurts Tobacco Crops In Lancaster

Autumn weather brings a killing frost in Lancaster County. Crops ripen faster with some corn picking underway and about ten percent of the 28 000 acre tobacco crop hit, reducing value. Potatoes are being dug, oats and barley seeded, silos filling, and rainfall into September totals 2.7 inches with a cool to warm forecast ahead.

Angus Heifer Show Draws 17 Counties to Unionville

Young Angus breeders from 17 counties in central and southeastern Pennsylvania will gather in Unionville for the 4H and FFA Angus Heifer Show. Orville F. Haas, president of the Brandywine Angus Breeders Association, announced the all day event on Saturday.

Lampeter Fair Swine Division Honors C Richards Hastings

C Richard Hastings tops Chester White boar at the 1st Lampeter Community Fair in Lancaster County. He also won at Quarryville earlier, as 62 swine entries and 23 baby beeves plus nearly 100 dairy cattle showcased a record agricultural exhibit. Other winners include Bob Book and Ronald Book with Hampshire entries, and Donald Welk and Robert McCullough in pen classes. Wayne Rentschler notes record exhibitor turnout.

Peach Picker Aukamp Turns 92 Still Works On Farm

George M Aukamp of New Providence Lancaster County marked his 92nd birthday with a family picnic on the old farm near Truce. Born in Lancaster in 1864 he began farming around the Civil War era and still picks peaches or tends tobacco most days. He has 12 living children 43 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren.

Lancaster County Cattle Feeders Tour Set for Oct 16

The Lancaster County Agricultural Agent announces an all day Cattle Feeders Tour on Tuesday October 16. Participants will study producing feeding and packing ends of the beef cattle industry. The tour will use bus and private car transport with 7:30 a.m. assembly at Conestoga.

Steer Show Champion Is Joyce Nolt At Ephrata Fair

Joyce Nolt 13 won the grand championship in the baby beef Hereford division at the 38th Ephrata Fair. Leona Augsburger 2nd, Darvin Boyd 3rd, Gloria Brubaker 4th in a event from Eagan Cattle Co. Ashby Nebraska. R1 Reinholds and Reinholds residents won showmanship and fitting contests as the fair moved into final events with a rally and concerts planned.
