Mount Joy to Wind Up 1956 Fair Season

Mount Joy wraps up the 1956 Lancaster County fair season with events at New Holland and Manheim Community Fairs. Livestock judging on Thursday. Queen crowned in Manheim. parade, baby shows, puppet show, street dance and concerts scheduled across days with multiple participants and local high school involvement.

Garden Spot Baby Beef Show Plans Developing

Plans for the 1957 Garden Spot Baby Beef Show and Sale are under formation for August with no date set. Lancaster Live Stock Yards interests and farm youth leaders met to start the program and begin accepting entries for youths ages six to 18. Baby beeves must be purchased at Lancaster Stock Yards to be eligible. Tech 1, 1957 will close entries.

Washington Nears India Trade Pact for 400 Million Deal

Washington reports a near agreement with India on a 400 million sale of US agricultural surpluses. The deal would channel grain and other farm products to India, reflecting ongoing efforts to expand overseas markets.

Greider White Leghorns Win State Contest

A pen of 13 White Leghorn hens from Greider Leghorn Farms Mount Joy won first in the Pennsylvania Official Egg Laying Test. The entry laid 3 823 eggs for 4 097 points in 11 months, leading 78 pens from 15 states and Canada. The hens finished fourth overall among birds in eight tests conducted simultaneously.

Pennsylvania Feeder Calf Sale Set For Lancaster Yards

Committees plan the second annual Pennsylvania Feeder Calf Sale at Lancaster Stock Yards with entries from Herefords Angus and Shorthorns. The auction starts at 1 pm on November 3 featuring calves yearlings graded and sold individually or in pen lots. County farm youth are reminded this is a good chance to obtain club calves.

County Youth Top Judging at Brandywine Heifer Show

Lancaster County youth breeders dominated the 1956 Four-Hand FFA Angus heifer show at Fox Hill Farm Unionville. Exast Frey of Quarryville won grand champion and $50, with Darvin Boyd of Ephrat a taking second and $25. Both youths had recent wins at Ephrata and Southern Lancaster fairs.

Flying Farmers to Visit Lycoming Co in Williamsport

Pennsylvania Flying Farmers will visit Lycoming at Williamsport on Friday October 19. John B Gehman announces a factory tour by Lycoming, major engine producer, with luncheon to follow. Fly-in is 10 to 10 30 am at Williamsport Airport and ground transport is provided. Reservations due to Mrs L L Logan by Oct 15. Harry W Arnold elected PFFA director to fill unexpired term of L L Logan.

At the annual meeting of the association held Friday November 16 at the Coatesville YMCA the Heifer Project was named. Continued on Page Five.

Fly Free Date For Wheat in County Oct 10

Lancaster County agricultural note states Oct 10 as the fly free date for planting wheat in this section if a dual variety is used. Barley planting is active, silo filling and corn husking underway. Potatoes are being dug and a cool September with above normal rainfall characterized the Garden Spot. The Weather Bureau notes near normal temperatures 50 to 70 degrees with light showers possible later in the week.

Community Center plans highlight farm group needs

About 25 Lancaster County farm organizations listed top needs for a proposed Civic Center. Auditorium seating and dining facilities were prioritized, with additional requirements including office space, a demonstration kitchen, meeting rooms, and an arena. The poll, led by LaVerne Pownall and Stanley Musselman, awaits further tabulation.
