Weights For Farm Tractors Improve Traction
Ed Constien a Missouri University agricultural engineer notes that adding weight to tractors increases traction by reducing tire slippage. He compares cast iron wheel weights with in tire weights, noting costs practical limits and the ability to remove tire weights. Calcium chloride and water is favored as the least expensive option.

Method to increase tractor pulling force by ballast and slippage test
The guide explains adding ballast up to tire capacity and using calcium chloride to weight water for freezing resistance. It notes 100 pounds per axle can boost pull by about 50 pounds on sandy loam and 36 on dry sand, and 600 pounds on a three plow tractor raises pulling power by about 10 percent. It describes measuring slippage by marking a rear tire and comparing revolutions with and without load, giving a formula to compute percent slippage.
U S Plan Eases Hog Cholera Serum Reserves
Lancaster Farming reports the USDA says the four phase hog cholera eradication program reduces anti serum needs as outbreaks decline. Since December 1962 the national effort has cut outbreaks to 583 in the year ending July 1, with 1,110 in 1965 and 1,118 in 1964, and over 97 percent of swine now in states in Phase II.
