The 66 County Fair season begins next week with 4H and FFA steer hog and alpaca shows in Lancaster County. Steer shows run Thursday at Solanco 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Ephrata. Last year’s Solanco champion was a Hereford owned by Fred Linton Jr shown by Kenneth Butt.
Three new teachers began duties in two of Lancaster County high schools offering vocational agriculture programs. Ralph Layman moved to administration. Bahner, a 1956 Penn State graduate, earned a 1962 master’s in agricu ltural education and previously taught in Bucks County. He is married with two children. Also at Solanco Jeny L McCannell from Washington will replace William Fiedd on leave until September.
Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District directors set Tuesday March 7 1967 as the date for the annual banquet meeting with the venue to be announced They discussed guest speakers at a Wednesday Courthouse meeting but made no decisions Vice chairman Henry Hackman reported on the Susquehanna River Basin meeting noting discussions there (Continued on Page 9).

Lancaster County showmen earned only a few scattered hits though they competed in major dairy events at the Farm Show Building Harrisburg this week. The brightest spots came in the state junior daily show on Monday and the state Black and White show on Tuesday.
Harrisburg report on the 11th annual Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show notes Lancaster County 4H and FFA exhibitors. James R Esbenshade of Quarryville R2 won the senior calf class with Unicorn Royal Queen, earning the 4H junior championship in Ayrshire. The article mentions a continuation on page 4.
A four year old Wis Catain son owned by Clarence Stauffer of Ephrata was the sole Lancaster County winner at the Pennsylvania Black and White Dairy Show in Harrisburg Tuesday. Sunny Craft Dean Captain, rated Ex 90, repeated its reserve senior and reserve grand champion honors this year matching last year’s show performance.
Rainfall in August prompted a slight upgrade by the state crop reporting service to 1700 pounds per acre for the Pennsylvania seedleaf crop. The forecast implies a total near 42.5 million pounds, about 17 percent below last year’s output and below the 1960-64 average.
The Lancaster County Swine Producers Association announced plans for a fall carcass show and on foot evaluation contest. The double event will be held on Thursday, September 29, in conjunction with Pace 6.
The Lancaster County Poultry Association announces its annual tour for Saturday October 8 with departure at 8:30 am from Agway Supply Center 1027 Dillerville Road Lancaster and return around 5 pm Tour highlights include a large cattle operation lunch at Longwood Gardens and a view of an atomic power plant The first stop is Buck and Doe Run Farm in Chester County owned by King Ranch of Texas with 6000 Santa Gertrudis cattle across 10 000 acres Farm manager Samuel Wilson will discuss operation details including cowboys and quarter horses.
