Entomologist Henry Menuson told Lancaster Farming alfalfa growers they may choose between two fall insecticides for crop protection. Dieldrin will be continued as a recommended option after good past results. Heptachlor, recently released for use, will be listed once official labels arrive. Both products are expected to control the clover weevil effectively.

Certificates Issued for Calf Vaccinations by State
Harrisburg farmers with calves vaccinated against brucellosis on or after June 1 will receive official calfhood vaccination certificates from the State Department of Agriculture. Certificates show original owner, vaccination date, calf age, herd number, breed and identification numbers. Only calves vaccinated between four and eight months qualify as officially vaccinated for interstate movement. The reverse side records ownership transfers and ear-tag changes. The certificate is needed when applying for a health certificate.

James Brubaker receives $50000 Future Farmer scholarship
James C. Brubaker, 17, is named Outstanding Future Farmer of Lancaster County after a Thursday ceremony by Lancaster County Teachers of Vocational Agriculture. The $50,000 scholarship, presented by Chris Kunzler of Kunzler and Co. Inc, must be used for tuition in an agriculture curriculum at Penn State.
