Maurice Herr grows about three acres of gladiolas each year for local greenhouses and retailers. He explains his time frame crop does not yield income for six years and possibly not then, funding lives on other crops while developing a new gladiola variety.
A double Ayrshire win and a top Guernsey judging kept Lancaster County 4-Hers in purple at the District Dairy show Thursday. Winners included Ailyn Flamish and Floy Lititz R2 with Kr Ayrshires, Bill Itton KirKwood with a Guernsey. Levity Ann, the Ferguson entry, repeated state honors and advanced to the national dairy cattle show in Waterloo Iowa.
Nat’s Director of Breeding Co-ops Earl L. Groff of Strasburg who represents the Southeastern Pennja Artificial Breeding Cooperative won a second consecutive three year term on the seven member Board of Directors of the National Association of Artificial Breeders at the 14th annual convention in Syracuse New York. He also chairs the cooperative's Holstein Site Purchasing Committee and has long served as SPABC president and a delegate to the National Holstein convention.
Barry Kulp reports nineteen riders from two county 4-H light horse clubs earned spots to the district show at Ludwig Corners Chester County on September 16. Top county finishers from Bareville qualified, with state show prospects in Harrisburg in November. Names include Sidney Ann Shoemaker Barbara Shoemaker Karl Herr Gerald Wagner Anna Minkley Harold C Groff Bully Gibble Robert Gibble Eugene Wenger and others.
Conestoga Valley 4 H Sewing and Cooking club presented a fashion show during a tea at Conestoga Valley High School. Lois Ann Overgaard and Phyllis Landis narrated as members modeled summer club projects by Linda Hooker and Esther.
Garden Spot 4-H hosts Manor Club at Lampeter Community Park for a friendly baseball game. Wilmer Wenger names David Denlinger ticket committee chair for the 4-H Leaders Club Chicken Barbecue to be held Sept 16 from 4 to 9 pm. Lois Ann Overgaard named booth chair and the club votes to donate 500 to Buchmiller Park emergency fund for wind damage repairs.
Red Rose Dairy Herd Improvement Association members will face a new rate for cows added after October 1. The board announced an extra twenty cents per cow for each addition during the testing year. A board spokesman said DNA records processed at a central point have kept accurate processing cost records, showing current monthly costs.
The Red Rose Dairy Herd Improvement Association records show J Mowrey Frey Jr’s Lancaster R7 Holsteins had July top butterfat with 55 lbs from 33 cows at 1,549 lbs milk and 38 test. Other high hitters include Raymond and Louie Witmer Willow Street with 1,050 lbs milk at 52 test and 54 lbs fat, and Elam Bollinger Manheim Ri with Paula B yielding 17,254 lbs milk and 697 lbs fat at 41 test.
The forecast calls for five days of above normal temperatures with nights near 60 and afternoons around 80. Expect hot humid conditions through Monday with a cool down by Wednesday. Rain totals range from .1 to .5 inch with scattered thunderstorms early to Monday and widespread showers Tuesday into Wednesday.
