Iowa Leads Nation in Farm Population in 1970
A USDA study shows Iowa Minnesota and Illinois top states for farm residents in 1970, the first time a Southern state did not hold the lead. By 1960s end farm residents fell from 157 million to 97 million nationwide, with the South suffering the biggest drop due to cotton mechanization and sharecropping declines. North and South Dakota had about one quarter of residents on farms, while only 13 states exceeded 10 percent farm populations in 1970.
