Two Countians Nominated For FFA American Farmer Degree

John Eby Jr of Gordonville and Melvin Bireneman of Strasburg are nominated for the American Farmer degree, the highest FFA honor. The two represent the best of Pennsylvania’s FFA members and will receive the degree at the national convention in Kansas City this October. John Eby Jr, 21, is a Pequea Valley High School graduate, now in a family farming partnership continuing after graduation.

Agr Teachers Plan Fair Activities At Manheim Central

At Manheim Central High School Lancaster County vocational agriculture teachers mapped the community fair program. Lewis Ayers announced the 4H and FFA junior dairy show on September 24 at 7 pm with John Harris as judge. The baby calf show is September 23 at 7 pm and a tractor driving contest occurs September 25 in the high school lot.

Pennsylvania Cows Largely Bred Artificially Says Report

The Dairy Herd Improvement Section of the U S Department of Agriculture reports that more than 40 percent of all US dairy cows were bred artificially last year. Pennsylvania leads states with 64.1 percent of its dairy cows artificially bred, while Wisconsin ranked fourth with 58.5 percent.

Farm Calendar Lists Sparse Labor Day Week

At forecast time the next week shows only Labor Day and back to school day events. The sparse schedule suggests limited activities for the period.

ASC Committeemen Elected For Sixteen County Communities

Eighty committeemen were elected this week to represent communities under the county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office. The chairman, vice chairman, and regular member of each committee become delegates to the ASC county election convention on September 13 at 8 pm to select the county board. Community No. 1 lists Coney West Donegal and Mt. Joy Town with the chair, vice chair, regular member, and alternates.

Milk Hearing Rescheduled for October 4 in Philadelphia

The USDA Consumer and Marketing Service announced a rescheduling of the public hearing and amendments to the Delaware Valley federal milk marketing order to October 4 at 10 am in the Sylvania Hotel Philadelphia. The order governs minimum prices for dairy farmers in the Philadelphia and Wilmington metropolitan areas and much of southern New Jersey. The decision on terminating the order would be deferred due to general agreement.

A farm industry leader, Frank J Lipman president of Lipman Brothers in Augusta Maine, is set to address poultry producers from 44 states at the annual Harrisburg meeting in October. His talks are described as information packed and designed to stir discussion on industry issues.

Mark Campbell Named Vocational Agriculture Teacher at Manheim HS

Mark Campbell of Herndon Pennsylvania was chosen to replace Herbert Hoffritz as teacher of vocational agriculture at Manheim Central High School. A Penn State graduate in agricultural education aged 23, Campbell will assist Jess Binway in the department and brings rural farming background from a Northumberland County dairy and poultry farm.

Lancaster County FFA Show Honors Dairy Winners and Champions

Twelve blue ribbons and three titles were awarded at the FFA Southeastern District Dairy Show in Hershey. Daryl L. Bollinger repeated his Holstein junior championship with Star Legis Osborndale, claiming additional blue ribbons. Jay Marvin Herr won junior and grand championships in Jersey, while Dale Forwood claimed junior and grand Brown Swiss titles with Weeping Willow Magic Pansy. others contributed entries as well.

DHIA Directors Review Rate Increase Impact

At a quarterly meeting in Agway Inc the Red Rose Dairy Herd Improvement Association heard Wilbur Houser report no herd losses from the 5 cent per cow rate hike effective July 1 1965 The raise to testers had raised testing fees from 25 to 30 cents per cow for DHIA program herds The insurance for association equipment was also discussed by the committee Continued on Page 4

Watershed Projects On The Way In Northeast

Eighty seven towns with 518000 people will obtain municipal water from 88 reservoirs in 70 watershed projects. Twenty two reservoirs will supply 173000 residents in Maine Massachusetts New Hampshire Pennsylvania Virginia and West Virginia. Projects are authorized by Public Law 56 of 1954 and carried out by local groups with USDA support.

Weekend Warmth Becomes Weekday Cool With Rain Expected

Temperatures for Saturday through Wednesday look to average near 80 with lows around 59. Expect a warm weekend and cooler early next week. Rain is forecast Tuesday and Wednesday, totaling about a quarter to half an inch.
