The USDA Soil Conservation Service reports a 53 percent rise in non federal conservation effort over five years. In fiscal 1965 farmers ranchers and local entities contributed 3 516 man years valued at over 25 million dollars, about half by individuals, reducing the need for additional SCS staff.

The Holstein-Friesian Association of America reports that 100 Holstein herds in the area were classified for body type by official inspectors Ronald C Chapman Emmetsburg Iowa Clyde Wilson Rushville Pa and Merley Howard Hales Corners Wisconsin. Classification measures the physical conformation of individual animals against the theoretical perfection of the true type cow or bull. The following breeders had their herds classified, alphabetically by towns. ATGLEN Timothy K Kauffmann 26 animals 5 Very Good 11 Good Plus and 10 Good. Gideon K Stoltzfus 48 continued on Page 7.
Penn State researchers led by John W. Bratzler report corn silage reaches peak value at full dent stage with higher total digestible nutrients. Ears account for 50 to 60 percent of dry matter at peak silage value and early stages show too low dry matter for ensilage.
Horace L. Mann, Pennsylvania Farm Show director, announces a bovine bathing and barbering installation for the second Pennsylvania All American Dairy Show at the Farm Show Building September 13 to 17. Five wash racks on a 13 acre complex, each holding ten cows with 15 minute turnover, allow 200 cows per hour. Entries may reach last year's nearly 2,500 head as bathrooms run around the clock with electric power for clippers.
Fulton Grange 66 met August 23 at Oaklyn with Gyles H. Brown presiding. Members voted a donation to the Arthritis Foundation. The Grange Hall floors and walls have been refinished.
Holstein breeders from Lancaster County swept the Southeast District Black and White Show at Hershey to reclaim the drought-breaking crown. The top nine-year-old cow Oliverdale Inspiration Terry, owned by Robert H. Kauffman, Elizabeth Town, and J. Robert Hess, Strasburg, won aged cow, senior, and grand championships, triumphing over hundreds of cows in its divisions.
Sam Wylie of Bryn Mawr won grand champion at the Chester County 4 H Swine Roundup held at Vintage Livestock Auction Paradise Pa his 220 pound hog topped over 25 entries He also won first in fitting and showing the champion hog was bought by New Holland Sales for 75 cents a pound The 4 H Pig Sale at Vintage Livestock Auction featured Etna McDowell oxford R2 as reserve champion sold to Devault Packing for 36 cents a pound Twenty six 4 H pigs were shown with an average price of 2740 per hundred and average weight 213 pounds
The USDA outlines a proposed Packers and Stockyards Act policy statement to guide packers retailers slaughtering livestock or preparing meat in commerce and others in settling contract disputes. It details factors the Consumer and Marketing Service would consider when contract disputes reach its attention to determine possible violations.
Eligible voters in the county receive ballots for the ASC committee election. Sixteen community committees will assist the ASC county committee. Farm owner tenant or sharecropper eligible to vote if eligible to take part in ASC programs. Ballots must be marked.
