During a Chester County tour a Lancaster County farmer reported corn yields from 75 to 150 bushels per acre with many over 100. County Agent Max M. Smith cited favorable weather and noted safe pasturing guidance for clover and alfalfa after frost, urging delayed hay cutting. Tobacco cure described as good.
The USDA reports that as of August 31, 1956 the Commodity Credit Corporation investment in price support programs totaled 7,829,984,000 dollars. Loans outstanding stood at 2,463,146,000 dollars with 230,386,803 financed by lending agencies, plus inventories valued at 5,366,838,000 dollars. The previous year, August 31, 1955, showed a total investment of 7,116,855,000 dollars with loans outstanding at 133,714,990 and inventories at 5,779,712,000.
The Eastern States Farmers Exchange plans to open its new office and warehouse at Manheim Pike and Duller ville Road in Lancaster on January 1. The $50,000 building measures 22 by 50 feet and includes a 40 by 60 foot truck dock.
Two livestock events head the early November calendar with a Pennsylvania feeder call sale on November 3 at 1 p.m. featuring steer heifer calves and yearlings across Angus Hereford and Shorthorn breeds. Lancaster County Future Farmers of America will compete in the first annual county Land Judging Contest on the Andrew Hackman farm in Manheim. A plaque will be awarded to the winner and the first-place chapter may send its representative to the intercounty meet in York County later.
Harrisburg reports the Pennsylvania honey crop for the past season is 2,940,000 pounds, 40 percent below 1955. The output came from 147,009 colonies, about 1,000 fewer than last year, with frost and cool weather ending the fall nectar flow and prompting winter feeding.
Harrisburg reports about 264000 game birds released in Pennsylvania by the Game Commission for the 1956 small game season. Ring necked pheasants totaled roughly 52 000 released in spring with more releases planned including 22 000 cocks and 9 000 hens this month and 12 000 cocks in November. Bobwhite quail included 6000 released on agricultural land this spring and about 2500 released this fall with 130000 pheasant chicks anticipated for the season.
