Scientists at Plum Island Animal Disease Laboratory of the US Department of Agriculture report purified isolated and photographed the foot and mouth disease virus. Electron micrographs show a spherical virus about one millionth of an inch in diameter far smaller than polio and likely to speed research for disease control with major livestock economic impact. Brucellosis transmission from infected semen is possible but rare from bulls. conception rates drop and delayed conception may occur if cows are bred 50 to 60 days after calving.
