Crop outlook in Lancaster County mixed but favorable overall

County Agent Max M Smith reports general goodness of the crop picture in Lancaster County. Corn planting has begun with 10 to 20 percent done. A soaking rain is needed in southern Lancaster. Rye silage timing, pre-emergence weed sprays, and preservation methods are advised amid alfalfa weevil pressure. Tobacco and tomatoes lag due to frost and cold. hot weekend gave way to chilly midweek with light rain.

Chicks of Tomorrow Enter State Contest in Pennsylvania

Chicks of Tomorrow entered in the Pennsylvania State Contest by James Clanton of Kennett Square were flown to Hollidaysburg on Tuesday by L L Logan vice president of the Pennsylvania Flying Farmers. Accompanying them were Clyde Jackson and Clanton sold entries at Cochranville for 4 dollars per pound.

Mountville House Sells for 6100 at Public Auction

Janie Staub of Mountville purchased the 2 percent story frame house in Mountville offered by Amanda S Hendricks for 6100 in a Tuesday public sale. Auctioneer Edar F. Funk conducted the sale.

Top Four-H Youths Named by Lancaster County 4-H Club

Lancaster County 4-H Club honored ten youths at a spring party in the Guernsey Pavilion Lancaster. Miss Breneman received the Rural Youth Award for home economics leadership and Mr Augsburger for agricultural council leadership. Each winner earned a 25 dollar check from the County Farm Bureau fund. Other outstanding youths included Miriam Roland Phyllis Rutt Josephine Lausch Gladys Langrey Nancy Newcomer Eugene Groff Glenn Shirk Bruce Boyd with awards and pins.

Chicago Hogs Reach Ten Month High at $17 75

Chicago hog market Wednesday pushed to a ten month high of 17.75 a cwt as 30 head of No 1s averaging 215 pounds sold at that level. Most sales ranged 17.25 to 17.50 with higher bids not echoed in other markets. Indianapolis and St Louis National Stock Yards posted sharper declines, with bids 16.25 to 16.75 and many lots around 16.50.

House approves 1.9 billion for farm programs

The House passed a bill funding the USDA with 1.983 billion dollars for the fiscal year starting July 1 by voice vote. The measure is sent to the Senate and is not connected to a Soil Bank program.

Four H Club member H Fred Downey of Williamsport Maryland rose from the minor ranks to the upper brackets at the Stars Guernsey Convention Sale in Lancaster. Downey, 16, was among the top five priced in a 30 lot sale averaging 778 dollars. his four year old cow Carlos Robinsons Bonnie sold for 1050 dollars to William Y. Lee of Rocky Hill Farm Doylestown PA.

Top Chicken of Tomorrow Sells At $6 Per Pound

The Beacon Milling Co of Cayuga New York set the top price at six dollars per pound in the Pennsylvania regional Chicken of Tomorrow Contest Auction held in Coatesville. Ronald Shaffer of Aldover received 26.75 for six dressed birds, with other winners including Shirley Ann Ream of Lebanon and L L Logan Hatcheries of Kennett Square.
