North sky cooling potential for cattle shade studied
U S Department of Agriculture and University of California researchers in El Centro California measure north sky temperatures and find cool sky points about 60 degrees above the horizon that average 20 to 30 degrees cooler than ground air. They suggest shelters with large north sky exposure and reflective walls can transfer ground heat to the sky, boosting livestock cooling and weight gains. Cloud cover reduces radiant heat to sky, making the north sky a reliable heat sink during June to September.
