Violent Storm Walls Lancaster County With Floods And Damage

A fierce thunderstorm swept Lancaster County causing corn and wheat damage, flash floods, and power outage at the Lambert-Hudnut plant in Lititz. Rain peaked at four and a half inches north of Manheim, with 1.5 inches elsewhere. No injuries reported.

Chester-Delaware Poultry Barbeque Reported Success

The Chester Delaware County Poultry Assn barbecue at New Bolton Center near Kennett Square drew about 600 attendees despite heat. Co chairs Harry Adams and L L Logan praised support. Bob Powers and Joe Way cooked the chicken. visitors toured Longwood Gardens and enjoyed a fountain display. guests traveled from Butler and New York areas to Logan field for the event.

Angus Herd Classification Project Advances at Angus Board Meeting

The American Angus Association approved planning details for a voluntary Angus herd classification program to be available to members. Herds will be classified after 15 months, with a score card, record handling mechanics, and a Cornell-led committee of breeders and scholars guiding the process. The system aims to provide unbiased, uniform ratings to guide selection without affecting registration eligibility.

PFFA Hosts New York Flying Farmers Meeting in Milton

Pennsylvania Flying Farmers will host New York Flying Farmers for a joint meeting July 6 at Jacob Miller's Milton PA. Fly in 9 to 11 a.m. at a private field south of Mulon, north of Milton Commercial Airport. Runway 50 by 1,200 feet. Picnic lunch at noon. Discussion on 1958 convention bid regional tour in Mid October 1957 Chicago convention and a clam bake August 3 at Lock Norton s Elba NY. Boating and swimming at Mullers.

Fourth Causes Schedule Change in Lancaster County

The July 4 holiday causes two schedule changes in Lancaster County. Lancaster Farming deliveries will arrive a day late next week due to printers' day off. The Lancaster County Poultry Exchange auction moves to July 5, with regular schedules resuming the following week.

Record Funds Being Offered For Farm Show

A record $61,400 in premiums will be offered at the 1958 Pennsylvania Farm Show. State Agriculture Secretary William L Henning announced the total, surpassing the 1957 high by over $2,200, funding 27 departments of awards for farm products exhibits demonstrations and school group showcases. The commission approved premium list changes and moves toward a Rural Folk Dance Festival and a 4H pony and light horse exhibition during Farm Show Week. The festival plans include county championships with prizes totaling $750 and 60 square dance sets in costume. The 1958 Farm Show runs January 13 to 16.

Cultivate with caution and broadcast cover crops

County Agricultural Agent advises careful final cultivation to avoid cutting corn roots and stunting yields. Recommends broadcasting 20 pounds per acre of domestic ryegrass or field bromegrass after last cultivation to build soil, control erosion, and provide pasture. Warns against gibberellic acid use on edible crops. Suggests shading gasoline tanks to reduce evaporation and valve sticking in hot weather.
