Late Blight Reported on Tomatoes Shipped from South

Late blight found on tomatoes moved into Maryland New Jersey and West Virginia threatens Pennsylvania potato and tomato crops. Associate County Agent Harry Sloat urges growers to inspect southern or outside sources plants and begin immediate spraying with Manzate or fixed copper to control blight and leaf spots.

The Pennsylvania Grassland Club membership closes July 15 and the State Five-Acre Corn Club closes August 1. The clubs reward best practices and highest yields. Application blanks are at the County Extension Office.

Shade and soil tips for livestock and pastures

Extreme heat reduces livestock efficiency. If natural shade is unavailable, artificial shade should be provided for hogs and sheep. Extension office offers plans and suggestions. Plan soil tests now for August alfalfa or early fall pasture seeding. Lime and fertilizer are needed for good growth. Last week the thirteenth group of dairymen began DHIA testing under a new IBM system allowing farmers to self-sample monthly with tester pickup.

Poultry Scholarships Go Begging at Northeastern Colleges

A survey by the Northeastern Poultry Producers Council finds poultry scholarships at state and private colleges in 14 states largely unused due to few applicants. Firms report six to seven job openings per graduate this month, while many scholarships from Pennsylvania State University and other schools go unclaimed. Copies of the scholarship list are available by writing NEPPCO in Trenton NJ.

Eleven Beauties Vie For Lancaster Penny Queen Title

Eleven young women, all relatives of poultry workers in the county, compete for the Lancaster County Penny Queen at the Poultry Association barbecue at Lititz Springs Park. Contenders include Ruth E Osborne and Joan G Mumma, with events such as a poultry cooking contest and educational displays. Judging at 7 pm with a morning cooking round, prize recipes to be printed in Lancaster Farming.

County Producers Hit High Price Week of June 1

Lancaster poultry market saw the week's highest average price for chickens in 13 weeks as 116000 birds sold at 22.40 cents per pound. Broiler chick placements for Pennsylvania declined to 783000, down 2 percent from the prior week and well below the 1956 level. Eggs set for broiler production fell 5 percent to 1221000, 11 percent under 1956 production. Non broiler eggs also remained below last year.
