Inspectors Seize Pests on Planes From Europe and Asia
Coffee berries carried living larvae of the fruit fly and as many as 65 larvae were found in oranges discarded from a plane from Southern Europe landing at Miami. Plant quarantine inspectors intercept 150 to 200 pests annually in fresh fruit destined for the United States. Last year 8 live Japanese beetles were found in aircraft arriving in Hawaii from Japan and about 50 live European chafers were found on an overseas plane at Paris, where they swarmed around airport lights. Prompt pest recognition and aerial spraying killed some before escape.
