Study Links Dark Yolks to Lower Candled Grades
University Park reports egg candling shows dark yolked eggs consistently receive lower grades than light yolked eggs of equal quality. The Pennsylvania State University experiment, supervised by Werner J. Mueller, suggests rechecking candled grades against broken-out eggs and candling eggs by yolk color to reduce misgrading.

Woodpecker study notes unusual captive rearing effort
A graduate zoology student, H. T. Pfitzenmeyer, raised a pileated woodpecker chick to adulthood then placed it in an aviary to study its habits. The bird, as large as a crow, is noted for its swooping flight and loud call. Field tests will evaluate repellents on posts used with utility poles.
