Beltsville Scientists Find New Stripe Mosaic Detect Methods
Beltsville Md researchers at the USDA Agricultural Research Center developed two simple tests the blocking and synergy tests to detect milk or latent stripe mosaic virus in barley and wheat. The methods screen seed lots for virus free plants advancing healthy seed supply and reducing crop losses from the seedborne virus.

Record Feed Grain Carryover Predicted for 1957-58
The May 21 1957 Feed Situation report by the Agricultural Marketing Service forecasts total feed grain carryover into 1957-58 around six million tons above the 1956-57 record. Total feed grain and concentrates supplies for 1956-57 are estimated at just over 200 million tons, about four million more than 1955-56, with disappearance expected to be slightly smaller than last year due to reduced exports.

Latest AMS figures show farm marketings totaling 8.4 billion dollars in the first four months of 1957, up three percent from 1956. Receipts from livestock and livestock products reached 5.3 billion dollars, crop receipts were 3.1 billion dollars, about the same as last year.
