Slaughter steers 50-75 cents higher while heifers rise about 50 cents and cows soften 50-75 cents in thin trade on expanded supply. Bulls and small feeder listings hold steady. First three day slaughter steer average 32.03 per cwt on 1106 lb basis, up from week prior.
The Green Dragon market Friday reported 116 head of dairy cattle with prices steady. Consignments included Canadian cows and springers with varied price ranges, plus loadings of purebred springing heifers and Canadian springers. Beef cattle and feeders showed lower prices in an active market with ranges for cutter, fat, and utility cows and stocker steers and bulls.
Feeder cattle receipts near 11 200 as of 1 p.m. with steady to higher demand aided by hot dry weather. Feeder steers and heifers across weight ranges show mostly Good to high-Choice quality with prices 29 to 43 per hundredweight in various lots and loads.
Cucumber Smoker reports the new harvester covers an acre in about four hours, about twice as fast and ten times easier than hand gathering. It eliminates bag handling and reduces physical strain on workers, leaving pickers smiling instead of in pain. Smoker's effort grew from Stoltzfus quitting over labor, with Smoker promising to build the unit after his son-in-law proposed expanding to an acre. Smoker has ties to Smoker Elevator Plant and to New Holland Machine Company, now Sperry Rand.
