Zeranol Boosts Beef Profits Says Penn State Scientist
Penn State animal scientist Dr. Lowell L. Wilson reported at Northeastern Society of Animal Science meetings that zeranol implants raised weight gains by at least 7 percent in heifers and 9 percent in steers. Implants, marketed as Ral-Gro, were tested on 60 heifers and 276 steers over 112 days with a 36 milligram dose. No harm to carcass quality was found and combining zeranol with other implants showed no added benefit.
