Railroads in the Northeast face possible shutdowns if relief from Washington fails, costing Pennsylvania farmers up to 400 million dollars more yearly. Feed costs would spike as shippers press Congress for government aid to rail transport, aligning with prior funding for ports, airports and highways.
E L Tennyson deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spoke in Wilkes Barre on Wednesday night asserting that if railroad user taxes were spent like highway taxes the rail crisis would ease. He noted gross receipts taxes on rail freight and capital equipment total about 23 million annually for the state treasury and urged reinvestment in track maintenance and railroad needs.
A record crowd viewed Lancaster County Conservation Field Day contests near Elizabethtown with eleven farmers entering plowing events at Roger Thome’s farm. Winners included Harvey Lauder in contour plowing and Merle Groff among other state qualifiers for Ag Progress Days at Milton Hershey School Farms in Hershey.
Guernsey 4-H and Lancaster District Holstein shows dominated a busy week at the Guernsey Sales Barn. Forty-one Guernseys competed for ribbons with Marlin Stoltzfus of Banks earning grand and senior champion and champion senior showman. Mary Kirk won junior breed Guernsey, Carol Balmer was junior champion showman, and Mark Witmer was reserve senior showman. In Jersey competition 14 cows vied for ten ribbons, Barbara Jeanne Aaron of Quarryville taking three awards including senior yearling.
