Swine Industry Leader John Henkel Sees Bright Hog Future
Pennsylvania pork producer John Henkel, eastern state representative on the National Pork Producers Council, discusses tough times and a bright future for hogs. The Lancaster County Swine Producers tour on July 25 will visit the Smith, Kline and French Research Farm and the University of Pennsylvania center in Kennett Square, with 40 seats at $2.50 each. Henkel notes rising prices from slower hog gains, and the operation sells most hogs young to drug labs for disease-free research pigs. He cites atropic rhinitis and Mycoplasma pneumonia as weight-gain inhibitors and recalls a 1961 outbreak after moving to Strasburg.
