Straw clipping boosts yields in new meadow seedings says agronomist
Ohio State University agronomist E P Reed reports that clipping and removing straw after harvest increases grain crop seeding success. First cut alfalfa without straw yielded 1710 pounds per acre on three year average. removing straw after one mow raised by 1630 pounds. removing straw after a second late August mow raised by 1810 pounds. Replacing phosphorus and potash lost with straw via 100 pounds of 0-10-20 per ton of straw removed benefits the new meadow seeding.
