Cereal Anthracnose Fungus Found in Maryland Corn

Maryland Extension plant pathologists report wet weather spreading cereal anthracnose in scattered locations on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The infection, Colletotrichum graminicola, resembles Southern corn leaf blight and may require microscope confirmation. Researchers consider a possible chemical spray, but overall long term impact on corn is not deemed severe. Additionally scab or head blight threatens wheat and barley yields, with potential corn stalk rot risk in newly planted fields. farmers are advised to prevent dust from old crop materials spreading spores.
