Tobacco Market Opens Slow As Buyers Hesitate In Lancaster County
The 1960 tobacco crop market opened with a slow start then gradual momentum before thinning activity by Thursday. Consolidated Cigar Co and Amer ica Tobacco Co led bids from 28 to 35 cents for wrapper and filler, while other firms offered 18 to 45 cents for various grades. By week’s end eight firms had sheds open but little tobacco moved as farmers held for higher prices amid market uncertainty.

4-H Tractor Club Names New Officers in Quarryville

Penn State entomology specialist John O Pepper told farmers at Singer Farm Equipment in Banks that heptachlor is unlikely to receive clearance for alfalfa weevil control in 1961. He favors Mala thion or Methoxychlor with rates of three quarts per acre or 114 pints per acre respectively and warns against rushing to sprayed applications.
