Lancaster County FFA marks National FFA Week with ten chapters showcasing programs and displays. Blue jacketed Future Farmers educate the public on vocational agriculture and the legacy of George Washington’s ties to scientific farming.
The Lancaster County extension group schedules a March 6 banquet at Quarryville Memorial Methodist Church with Speaker Secretary of Agriculture Philip Alamo New Jersey. The event includes awards and reports on district work plus notable conservation and agricultural notices.
A county wide meeting on celery growing will be held in the packing room at Amos H Funk's farm near Mullersville on Monday February 19 starting at 1 30 p m Growers are asked to bring about a half dozen stalks with roots of the H 46 variety for comparison and possible seed production. Penn State University specialists J Q Dutt Roy Creech and Ernest Bergman will discuss breeding selection fertilization and growing practices and answer growers questions Plant Nutrition Research will also speak All vegetable growers are invited to attend.
The 11th annual Pennsylvania Potato Growers Institute will be held March 7 and 8 at Potato City Hotel near Coudersport. The meeting will discuss the national surplus and other major issues during the educational session on Wednesday, March 7, with the 46th annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Cooperative Potato Growers noted.
Lancaster County farmers discuss the February 20 referendum on tobacco marketing quotas. Raymond Connolly of the USDA explains who may vote, including how deeds and cropping agreements affect eligibility. Minor 4-H and FFA participants and landlords may vote if named on legal documents.
The Red Rose 4-H Baby Beef and Lamb Club banquet has been moved from Friday Feb 9 to Thursday Feb 22 at 6 30 p.m. The event will be held in the Armstrong Cork Company auditorium in Lancaster. Ticket holders should note the new date and time.
Vincent Becker was elected president of the Manheim Young Farmers Association at a meeting in Manheim Central High School. Elected were Melvin Shelly as vice president Paul Kline as secretary Eugene Hoover as treasurer and Forney Longenecker as director of public relations. The next meeting is March 15 in the agriculture room to discuss radioactive fallout and the farmer.
