Celery Growers Unveil Pen H-46 Houser Type Seed
Seed of the new Pen H-46 celery variety will be available to growers for the 1963 season. The release marks the end of a postwar search after the Houser strain was lost when Japanese seed suppliers were sent to relocation camps. Foundation stocks disappeared and existing Houser seed was exhausted.

Maternity Stalls Urged Clean for Calving By Dr Guss
Dr Samuel Guss Penn State extension veterinarian told Lancaster District dairy breeders that maternity stalls must be spotless, clean enough to spread peanut butter on the walls, or calving should occur in the cow’s own stall with a straw bale to keep the calf from the gutter. He warned the newborn calf relies on first milk gamma globulin for immunity and that antibodies form only after about seven weeks. He also urged dairymen to request plans for individual calf pens from the university.
