Lancaster County tobacco grower Ben Mann said old seed problems predated two Penn State varieties introduced last year. He noted the new types had both advantages and disadvantages and that growers face more serious seed source issues than these varieties. He favored Penleit-1 over Pendel-69 among the two new varieties.
Richard Neff of Mullersville was elected president of the Manor Young Farmers Association at a Monday night meeting. Robert Neff was chosen captain, with Earl Woomer of Lancaster serving as vice president Andrew Martin as secretary and Lloyd Staven as treasurer.
A sequence of Lancaster County farm notices lists a holiday party for Pequea Valley Future Farmers of America and Future Homemakers of America at Shigh school. Dates mark 4-H activities including a corn and tobacco roundup at Bayuk Cigar Company in Lancaster, an executive visit to Onondaga County, and a Farm Bureau cooperative meeting at Manheim Township Jr High. The Farm Show exhibits at the Farm Bureau auditorium in Dillervitl are scheduled.

J Zeigler Hess of Quarryville tops the 1962 five acre corn contest with 153.3 bushels per acre from five acres, planted May 2 with DeKalb 640 and harvested Oct 8. Arnie Lueck notes eight of the 16 top yields come from the county’s southern half. Other high finishers include Marlin Brubaker and Mahlon Shenk with 153.2 and 152.5 bushels per acre respectively.
Pennsylvania Governor elect William Scranton named Leland H. Bull as Secretary of Agriculture. Bull, 49, transfers from Penn State where he leads agriculture and home economics extension and will take the $20 000 a year post January 15. He will seek a leave of absence from his university role.
Lampeter Chapter Young Farmers Association elected J. Lloyd Rohrer Lancaster R7 president at the last meeting. He succeeded Alfred Overly Quarryville R2 who served three consecutive terms. The chapter reelected Harry Troop Quarryville R3 as vice president and Elvin Rohrer Jr Lancaster 2529 Horseshoe Road as secretary. Robert Mylin Lancaster R7 was named treasurer. John J Landis 2648 Creek Hill Road is the new reporter, and Ivan Bauman Lancaster R7 was elected chaplain.
Willis Esbenshade of Esben shade Road Lancaster spoke at the Seeing India presentation noting stockholders in the farmer owned organization will weigh amending the cooperative by laws to meet by laws consent provisions required by the Revenue Act of 1962. The article indicates an election of four men is discussed.
The 4 H corn and tobacco club roundups are set for December 27 at 1 p.m. at the Bayuk Cigar Company warehouse in Lancaster. Corn entries will show 10 ears of hybrid corn while tobacco entries display two hands of cured tobacco totaling 15 leaves. Prizes require a completed project book.
