Holstein breeders win Progressive Breeders Award honors
Herbert and Rhelda Royer of Lancaster receive the Progressive Breeders Award from the Holstein Friesian Association, one of a small number of farms nationwide to earn the honor. The Frey herd, J Mowery Frey and Son, and the Royers are cited for excellence in production, herd health, and home-bred animals with record milk yields and butterfat.

Garden Spot High School in New Holland uses Lancaster Farming as a study aid for seven vocational agriculture students. Under teacher Robert Heir the class reads the weekly paper and reports on news and features while focusing on market reports. Students keep market trend notebooks with graphs comparing beef, swine, sheep, poultry prices at local markets and Chicago yards.

Editor To Speak At SCD Banquet In Mount Joy
Jack Owen editor of Lancaster Farming will headline the Lancaster County Soil Conservation District banquet and annual meeting on March 6 at Hostetter's banquet hall Mount Joy. Owen public relations representative for the district will discuss telling the story of conservation and awards will be given to the city.

Kenneth D Myer a 1962 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School has been named Star Farmer of Region II by the state Association of Future Farmers of America He will receive the award at the state convention January 9 during the Pennsylvania State Farm Show in Harrisburg First runner up was Larry R Weaver New Holland R1 a Garden Spot High School senior Kenneth helped form a Calf Ring committee and purchased five purebred dairy calves He now owns 15 registered Guernseys planning to reach 20 He farms tobacco on a fifty fifty arrangement with his father and rents land for crops He expects to rent a nearby 70 acre farm after graduation Continued on Page 7
