County Steer Farmer Tops U.S. Cattle Market With 20 Head
Lancaster County steer feeder John Nissley of Mount Joy Ri led the U.S. fat steer market on September 5, 1967, with 20 steers averaging 1,303 pounds dressed at 63 percent and selling for 30.25 cents per pound. A further 30 steers earned 29.50 cents per pound, praised by the buyer Allen Packing Company for yield and lack of shrinkage. Nissley markets through the Lancaster Union Stockyards and plans to continue expanding his stock, with a mix of Jets-half Angus and half Herefords.

The Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District directors approved a 5 900 dollar budget and projected 140 new cooperators for 1968 at a planning meeting at Lancaster Court House. They set objectives across education, planning, and outreach including watershed meetings, cooperation with builders, radio and TV programs, youth camps, field days, and a long range plan. They also planned annual meeting for March 5 and reviewed the Chickies Watershed Plan.

Subirrigation boosts Delaware corn yields in trials
University of Delaware research shows eight hours of subirrigation at Georgetown plots raised corn by 16 bushels per acre in a wet year and delivered 40 bushels more in 1965. Mitchell notes the system can be activated quickly to prevent wilting.

A 350 strong group of Lancaster tobacco farmers marched to the Capitol to condemn a 35 percent cigar tax increase proposed in a House bill. They carried signs such as Unfair To Farmers and Farmers Oppose Cigar Tax and left signs at the door before marching under the Capitol dome.

Tobacco Growers Vote On Marketing Quotas Early In 1968
Farmers in Lancaster County will vote early in 1968 on whether to accept marketing quotas for Type 41 tobacco for 1968 1969 and 1970. Notices about 1968 allotments will be mailed before the referendum and quotas require two thirds approval by voters to take effect.
