Solanco Youth Jim Esbenshade Wins Farm Mechanics Area

Jim Esbenshade of Solanco is the area winner in the Farm Mechanics Achievement Contest. He built a mobile 400-pound elevator worth about 15000 by restoring and repurposing old equipment, including a junked coin picker and a burned motor, mounting it on a frame with salvage snow tires.

Nestleroth Wins Grand Championship at Pig Roundup

Nancy Nestleroth, 16, of Manheim R1, daughter of Carl and Mrs. Nestleroth, captured the grand championship with a 205 pound Diced Jersey gilt at the Lancaster Union Stock Yards. This marks the sixth straight year a Masonic Homes Farm herd entrant has won the title. The reserve champion Poland China weighed 230 pounds and was shown by Marlin Bollinger of Denver R2. The winner sold for 43 cents per pound at auction, with the sale average $26.08 per hundredweight and an average pig weight of 209 pounds.

Mumma Named Top Field Day Guernsey Judge

At the Lancaster County Guernsey Breeders Association field day Harry S Mumma of Landisville was selected as the best scoring judge. About 115 people attended the event on Paul Wilmer farm at Willow Street. Three cow classes judged senior yearlings two year olds and aged cows. The official judge was Harry F Roth Atlantic Breeders Cooperative associate manager and programs director who spoke on absorbing research information for breeders.

County NFU Hosts Two Day Youth Camp at Nottingham Park

The Lancaster and Chester County chapters of the National Farmers Union sponsored a two day youth camp at Nottingham Park Chester County. Clarence Blevins reports about 30 youths ages 6 to 16 attended from 9 30 am to 1 30 pm and 2 30 pm to 5 30 pm. Youths crafted and enjoyed recreational activities with parents attending on day two. Master of ceremonies was Doug Sheet. Blevins noted all performers were exceptional and no single talent singled out.

New Bill Expands Funds for Pennsylvania Fair Exhibitors

A new law in Pennsylvania increases funding for the Pennsylvania Fair Fund to boost exhibitor premiums. Thousands of agricultural exhibitors will compete for expanded prize lists at fairs, funded by taxes on horse racing. The measure was approved by the State Legislature and signed by Governor William W. Scranton.

Countians join Lancaster Poultry Association tour

Nearly 200 poultrymen, families, and others joined the Lancaster County Poultry Association tour this week. The event featured fried chicken lunches at New Holland Park served courtesy of Weaver's and a chartered air-conditioned trip for many participants.
