Storage Costs for Wheat in Western Kansas Elevators and Bins
The Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station and the Marketing Research Division studied wheat storage costs in 22 reinforced concrete elevators, 1000 to 13104 bushel bins, and 25000 bushel quonset buildings. Unit storage cost rises as space utilization falls, with 100000 bushel elevators at one fourth capacity costing 29.51 cents per bushel, about 193 cents more than full capacity. On farms, costs are at least 50 percent higher per bushel at half use than when unused. At 1000 bushel bins, full capacity storage is 8 cents per bushel annually, rising to about 12 cents at 50 percent utilization.
