County crops look good as tobacco heavy in Lancaster County

Lancaster County crops show favorable growth under warm weather. Tobacco is advancing rapidly though unevenly, with some fields promising the heaviest crop yet. Corn is sound but shallow rooting, while tomatoes, hay, and pasture are strong. August alfalfa seeding advised by the 20th.

County Guernsey Breeders Field Day Set for Aug 21

Lancaster County Guernsey Breeders will hold their annual field day Aug 21 at the Hershey farm two miles northwest of Wilmer. Three classes of cattle will be judged from 10 a.m. with Al McKay as official judge. An afternoon business meeting and entertainment follow, with Al Stag of Westminster Ma speaking on feed nutrition. Lunch is served by Farm Women of Wilmer at $1.00 per person.

A 250 pound pig escaped from a truck on Route 128 in Needham Massachusetts causing an hour long traffic snarl as it wandered the highway until a crane equipped truck arrived to recapture the hog back into captivity.

Lancaster market this week shows the smallest slaughter cattle supplies of the season with top prices up to the April 1955 level. Fed steers 1000-1300 lbs $2550-2750, prime loads $28.00-29.00 per hundredweight, andGood to low choice steers $22.50-25.00. Hogs mixed 1-3 200-240 lbs $18.25-18.50, 240-270 lbs $17.50-18.25, sows $12.00-14.00. Calves steady with good and choice $20.00-23.50, veal $24.00-28.00.

Frey Brothers Sweep Garden Spot Awards

Frey brothers dominate the Garden Spot Baby Beef Club Show led by 8 year old John Frey who won grand champion. John’s 945 pound steer sold for 737.10 to E H Diem and Son while Ernest Frey placed reserve with a 1080 pound Angus steer selling for about 540. The family from Twin Oaks Farm near Quarryville fields four siblings in the event.
