York 4-H Achievers Earn Big Honors at Penn State

York County 4-Hers dominated the 4-H Achievement Days held at Penn State Milton Eisenhower Auditorium. Contests covered individual and team events with medals or ribbons. York entered 69 4-H'ers and captured eight firsts along with multiple high placings as the competition concluded.

Harrisburg Deputy Ag Secretary Named Executive Deputy Secretary

Neal R. Buss of Grantville has been named executive deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Secretary Kent D. Shelhamer announced the appointment, praising Buss for his legislative and agricultural expertise. Buss has served as special assistant since February 16, and will focus on updating legislation and improving department efficiency for farmers and consumers.

Crops field day set at Penn State research farm

Landisville schedules August 11 field day at the Southeastern Field Research Laboratory near here. Penn State Agricultural Experiment Station will showcase hybrids corn forages potatoes soybeans tobacco grapes and flowers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch available via Lancaster County Society of Farm Women No. 5. John O. Yocum notes this is the year's largest event with Penn State staff on hand to explain studies including soil insecticide use and nitrogen residuals in soil.

Insect alert for sweet corn growers in Pennsylvania

Dieter Krieg reports Penn State Extension specialist Bob Tetrault saying farmers who haven’t sprayed for corn ear worm Fall army worm and European corn borer should monitor crops now through late September. He notes the Fall army worm is ahead of schedule and that black light trapping aids identification and control. States like Maryland New Jersey and Delaware are pushing ahead with research, while Colorado potato beetle was also mentioned.
